The Indian Army is setting up Rudra brigade and Bhairav units to boost its strength and readiness along the borders.
The Indian Army is gearing up to establish new ‘Rudra’ brigades and ‘Bhairav’ light commando battalions, aiming to strengthen their presence along the borders with China and Pakistan. These fresh units are part of a broader strategy to create a modern, quick-response force that’s ready to tackle future challenges head-on.
“This will increase our force multifolds,” said General Upendra Dwivedi during the Kargil Vijay Diwas in Drass on Saturday. He said the Indian Army is on its way to becoming a force to reckon with in the world. “Rudra, all of brigade, is being established for which I gave an approval yesterday. Under this, we will have infantry, mechanised infantry, armoured units, artillery, special forces and unmanned aerial units at one place to provide logistics and combat support,” he said.

The army has formed a special strike force Bhairav Light Commando Unit, which is “always ready to surprise the enemy at the border.”
“We are driven towards becoming a developed, modern and futuristic power. A new brigade is being established and I approved it yesterday. This will have fighting components like mechanised infantry, armoured units, artillery, special forces with logistic and combat support… Special forces have also been established that will always be ready to shock the enemy on the border,” he said.
As part of this initiative, around 250 brigades—each boasting over 3,000 troops will transition from having just one type of force to becoming mixed “all-arms” brigades. These revamped brigades will feature a blend of infantry, mechanized troops, tanks, artillery, Special Forces, and drones (UAVs). Additionally, they’ll receive specialized logistics and battle support tailored to meet their unique needs.
Operation Sindoor Strikes Sent Clear Message to Pakistan – Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized that the surgical strikes carried out during Operation Sindoor sent a powerful message to Pakistan, those who back terrorism will face consequences. He pointed out that these strikes were also a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which struck a deep chord across the nation. “This time, India didn’t just grieve — we delivered a strong and unmistakable reply,” he remarked at the Kargil War Memorial. General Dwivedi further noted that India’s defense capabilities are rapidly advancing, with the Army acquiring new indigenous missiles for its air defense systems. He reminisced about Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War last year, highlighting that the presence of top leaders signifies that Kargil Day is not solely about the military, but a celebration for the entire nation. In closing, he paid heartfelt tribute to the soldiers, stating: “Our country enjoys safety today thanks to the bravery of those who fought and sacrificed their lives in the freezing mountains. We honor their courage and dedication — they laid down their lives so we could live in peace and pride.”
