Agartala, August 14, 2025 — In a major counterterrorism operation, Tripura Police foiled a huge militant conspiracy just a few hours ahead of the country’s 79th Independence Day celebrations. Based on accurate intelligence, security personnel arrested two suspected militants and recovered a large quantity of explosives.
Operation Details
The operation took place in the evening of August 14 in North Tripura’s Kanchanpur subdivision. Police had arrested Dhananjoy Reang (39) of Hailakandi, Assam, and Sadai Nanda Reang (34) of Damcherra, North Tripura, near the Eden Tourist Lodge under Vangmun Police Station. The two are suspected to be members of Tripura United National Front (TUNF), a new militant outfit reportedly linked with Bru elements acting from Assam.
A follow-up search uncovered:
- High-quality explosives
- Electric detonators
- TUNF letterheads and menacing notices
- Three cell phones
- A phone book with telephone numbers
The militants planned to attack police or security personnel deployed for Independence Day duty with the intention to cause casualties and rob weapons to enhance the operation of TUNF. The prompt intelligence-driven operation foiled what would have been a big success for the attackers.
Rising Security Concerns
This event highlights the continued risk of cross-border militancy in Tripura. Security in the northeastern states has been tightened in view of Independence Day with added border patrols, strict movement controls, and enhanced public security measures to forestall infiltration, disturbance, and unauthorized cross-border movement.
Official Statements
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha appreciated the police action as being prompt, citing that the operation demonstrates the government’s determination to protect the integrity of the state and ensure peace ahead of national celebrations.
