Earlier India Issues Expanded NOTAM for Missile Test, 4,800 km Danger Zone Announced
India has released an expanded NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) prior to a long-range missile test planned for August 20–21. The danger area, initially defined at 1,500 km and subsequently extended to 2,500 km, has now been increased to almost 4,800 km into the Indian Ocean.
The window of opportunity directs us toward a test from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island along the coast of Odisha, or the Integrated Test Range (ITR). These extended NOTAMs are usually linked to tests of strategic ballistic missiles.
Government officials have declined to identify the missile system tested, but the unprecedented range extension indicates that a strategic long-range weapon is probably in development. Experts point out that the test track coincides with previous flights of India’s advanced missile projects.
A different civil aviation NOTAM continues to be in operation as India extended its prohibition against Pakistani aircraft passing through its airspace to August 23, 2025, amid recent tensions.
