India, Russia to Deepen Small Arms Manufacturing With New AK Variants

India and Russia are taking their long-standing defence collaboration to the next level by advancing talks for the joint manufacturing of two modern firearms the AK-19 carbine and the PPK-20 submachine gun. This move builds upon the existing partnership behind the production of the AK-203 assault rifle and signals a significant broadening of scope for the Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture formed for small arms production.
This enhanced partnership aims to transform India into a major manufacturing hub for next-generation infantry weapons, serving not only its own armed forces and police but also export demands from friendly foreign nations.
Progress on AK-203 Lays Strong Foundation
IRRPL, which operates from the Korwa facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, has made rapid progress in producing AK-203 rifles. As of July 2025, over 55,000 rifles have been delivered, and another 7,000 are expected by mid-August. The production rate has surged well beyond initial estimates, positioning the factory to complete the full order of over 6 lakh rifles (601,427 units) nearly two years ahead of schedule by the end of 2030, instead of the originally projected December 2032.
According to Major General S.K. Sharma, CEO and CMD of IRRPL, production is being ramped up significantly. Once full-scale operations are achieved, the facility will roll out one rifle every 100 seconds translating to a daily output of around 600 rifles, or an annual production capacity of 1.5 lakh units.
Indigenisation and Future Plans
The indigenous content of the AK-203 rifles has already crossed the 50% mark and is expected to rise to 70% by October 2025. Full localisation is targeted by December 31, 2025. This milestone highlights India’s increasing proficiency in absorbing and adapting advanced manufacturing technologies.
In parallel, discussions for complete transfer of technology from Russia for the AK-19 and PPK-20 are well underway. These modern firearms will further expand India’s domestic defence production ecosystem and reduce reliance on imports, aligning with the larger “Make in India” initiative.
AK-19 Carbine (Rifle)
The AK-19 is a new, modern rifle made for today’s army needs. It is a smaller and lighter version of the famous AK series, but it uses NATO bullets (5.56x45mm) the same type many Western armies use.
- Better design: Easy to hold and aim, with new hand grips and adjustable parts.
- More accurate: Helps soldiers shoot more precisely.
- Use in tough areas: Works well in high mountains, deserts, and urban areas.
- Good for counter-terrorism: Ideal for special operations where quick and reliable weapons are needed.
- Weight, firing speed, and shooting range are available in official sources.
PPK-20 Submachine Gun
The PPK-20 is a compact and lightweight gun designed for close combat, especially in tight spaces like buildings or vehicles. It is based on the earlier Vityaz-SN model.
- Smaller and lighter: Easy to carry and use in close fights.
- Quick shooting: Fires many bullets fast useful in sudden attacks.
- Better grip and comfort: Redesigned to fit well in hands and reduce fatigue.
- Used by special forces: Ideal for commandos, police, and elite units.
