A passenger aircraft operated by the Siberia-based Angara Airlines has gone missing just a few kilometres from its destination in Russia’s eastern Amur region, near the border with China. The An-24 plane, which was en route to the town of Tynda, lost contact with air traffic control while nearing the airport, according to reports from Reuters citing regional officials.

Preliminary information from Amur region governor Vasily Orlov indicates that there were 49 people on board, including 43 passengers among them five children and six crew members.

The aircraft disappeared from radar screens shortly before reaching a scheduled checkpoint close to Tynda Airport. In response, emergency services have launched a full-scale search operation to locate the plane, as confirmed by Governor Orlov via his Telegram channel. Russian news agency TASS also reported the plane’s last known location was just a few kilometres from the airport.
