Following Operation Sindoor, many stories of resilience and grit surfaced, few more than that of Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Flying the capable Su-30MKI multirole fighter aircraft, Malik played a key role in carrying out raids against high-priority terrorist targets along the border, for which he was decorated with the nation’s esteemed Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award.
The Operation and His Role
Operation Sindoor, launched in the wake of upscaling cross-border terror operations, was part of one of the largest joint aerial campaigns to be conducted by the IAF in the recent past. Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik, a seasoned fighter pilot, was assigned to lead a strike package of Su-30MKIs to attack terror camps deep inside Pakistan.
Despite being exposed to hostile enemy radar locks and closely contested aerial space, Malik flew his aircraft with incredible precision, keeping the mission objectives fulfilled without endangering the lives of his crew. His performance in evading the enemy surface-to-air missiles and still delivering accurate and precise strikes was greeted as an example of “exceptional flying skill under fire.”
The Award of Vir Chakra
Prizing his courage and quality, the President of India approved the conferment of the Vir Chakra on Squadron Leader Malik. His “unflinching valour, leadership in combat, and devotion to duty in the face of imminent risk” was noted in the citation. For everyone, his name can now be mentioned with India’s finest pilots who have brought honor to the country in times of war.
Symbol of Courage for the Next Generation
Apart from the medal, the story of Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik is one of a source of inspiration to Indian youth, especially would-be pilots who dream of serving in the Air Force. His story emphasizes the professionalism and commitment of the IAF in defending India’s sovereignty come what may.
